SIDS BAND BREAK AUCTION AUGUST 25thby Leslie Anne Connolly-StewartThe SIDS AUCTION will be held during band breaks Saturday August 25th from 9:00 P.M. 'til close Past Auctions have featured fantastic items including a 3/4 ct. Diamond Ring "This year you will find everything from pearl earrings to pizza," announced Atwood. The SIDS AUCTION supports a cause dear to all our hearts, the survival of our children. Diane Atwood and her partner Jim Davis, co-owners of Dimond Jim's Nite Club in Chula Vista are once again sponsoring An Auction to benefit the Guild for Infant Survival, Inc., O.C. " One hundred percent of the auction's proceeds will go to funding SIDS research, family counseling, a comforting professional office environment for meetings/events and SIDS awareness campaigns." according to Atwood. The silent auction is in remembrance of Diane's grandson A.J., who died of SIDS six years ago. What does SIDS mean? Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death for children 1 month to 1 year of age. Estimates indicate that in the U.S. alone, 7 to 10,000 seemingly healthy babies die each year of SIDS. SIDS is the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant, presumably during sleep, for whom a thorough postmortem investigation that includes an autopsy fails to disclose a reason for death. The cause or causes of SIDS are not known. Because death comes so suddenly and silently the public is unaware that SIDS exists. These infants are not suffering children whose pictures inspire our sympathy and help. Yet for every innocent baby death is final. And all that remains are empty cribs and broken hearts, memories and disbelief. The death of a child due to SIDS is a very painful experience for parents, grandparents and other family members. A sense of loss, tremendous feelings of guilt and disbelief can lead parents to blame themselves and others. The emotional devastation can haunt families for years. According to Diane Atwood, "SIDS is devastating because it's unknown, there is no time to prepare yourself, that's why counseling is so important." The Guild For Infant Survival Inc., O.C. offers monthly parent support meetings with peer counseling, 24 hour telephone parent contact, the collection and dissemination of accurate, current scientific and lay information related to SIDS, and the publication of a quarterly newsletter.
