A Very Special Holliday Gift

Pete Pattynama is a very well known karaoke host in the north County. He is 46 years old and has been playing, singing and recording music since he was 10. Throughout the years he collected music equipment used for playing in bands. In May 1992 he started his karaoke business. Converting music equipment to accommodate karaoke, he created a sound system that has earned the reputation of being the finest karaoke system in San Diego.
Pete played clarinet from 5th grade to 9th., played trumpet in 7th & 8th. and started playing guitar in the fourth grade. Pete aslo dabbled with French horn, Flute, and the piano. Played guitar and sang lead in a band in San Diego for different Assembly Of God churches. His 7 piece band finished in the finals at a Los Angeles competition for bands. The name of the band was "The Good News Generation" later named "Because Of Love." Next he played in a fifties band. "The Wingtips"
Pete started doing multi-track recordings around 1980 with a little 4 track cassette and a stereo 16 channel Carvin Mixer, a Guild D40 acoustic guitar, 1976 Fender P-bass, and an Obrehiem DMX drum machine. Pete would do all the instrumentals and vocals (lead and harmony.) Later the studio grew to a 1/2" 8 track reel to reel, then to an ADAT. Now his studio is computerized, utilizing LOGIC Platinum, a 32 channel 8 buss Soundcraft Ghost mixer, AKG Solidtube and AKG414TLII mics, Gibson Les Paul custom shop, 2 Fender Strats, a Lace Sensor, and an American Fat. A Korg Trinity V3, Yamaha DS21 drum set, an Alembic 5 string bass.
Pete Pattynama Worked for Kentucky Fried Chicken for 20 years starting as a cook, to assistant manager, manager, district training instructor, area manager trainee, to general manager position. He also worked as an Assistant Manager for Sambos & Denny's for 6 months each. After losing his job as a general manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken for making too much money, he decided there really was no job security in anything that wasn't civil service so he decided to pursue one of the things he was gifted in, but not in a corporation. Back then there were two things, weight lifting and music. He was very good at weight lifting. At one time he was only 20 lbs. away from the worlds record in the bench press, weighing 125 lbs. the record for that weight was 280 lbs. he was bench pressing 260 lbs. and military pressing 180 lbs.. Ten years later he went on to win a local competition in the bench press to lift 335 lbs., while weighing in at 175 lbs. He was always afraid of over exerting his body at those weights so he decided to pursue another gift, that of music.
In 1989 he started making background tracks to try to make it as a musician singing with just his background tracks. Then in 1991 he discovered a karaoke show in North County Fair with John Nutten, he thought, "wow I don't have to spend all that time re-recording all the tracks I could just buy them!" That was the start of his karaoke enthusiasm! He had the PA system and mics from when he played in bands, all he needed was the karaoke player and CDs! He thought, "I could then perform, or share my equipment with the public and become a karaoke host. All this and be involved with one of my God given gifts, music!" That was the start of his karaoke career! He's now going on his 11th year. Over the last eleven years he has appeared at: The Earthquake Cafe, Phil McNasty's, Whiskey Flatts and The Mission Inn, and is currently doing shows at, the Quails Inn, The Bollweevil, The Crazy Burro and Casino Pauma. Now Pete is puttting a larger system together to incorporate live bands and start a second system for private parties.
In 1993 he met his wife, Cristina. He had been married twice before, once for 8 years with one daughter Sarah, then again for 3 years with another daughter Michelle. Cristina has shared the ups and downs of the karaoke business almost from the start to present. Pete would like to recognize her support and the support of some of his friends: Jim Ormord, Will Jauregui, Kelly Kelly, his parents Frank & Elly, his brother Dan, and sister Shirley, Loy Monsanto, Shirley Baltazar, Gerry, Billie, Norman, Deborah, Anna Maria, Nate Buckhorn, Troy, Margo, Roy Ekert, and his mom, Nicole, Christina, Kurt Grunnen, Danny Schultz, Rich Martin, Johnny Stewart and the countless others who have helped in the growth of his music experience that Cristina & he have experienced.
Cristina & Pete have been married for 8 years now and just Dec 5th at 7:50pm had a new born baby boy, David Emmanuel Pattynama weighing 7lbs 11oz. and 19 & 3/4". Pete says, "Cristina and I have a strong faith in God. We wanted to start our babies life by thanking the creator that loaned him to us, thus the name, David. David was the greatest musician in Bible history, and Emmanuel for God is with us, hoping too he will lead a life of godliness." Also David Emmanuel Pattynama was born on Saint Nicholas Day as celebrated in Pete's original home Holland.
We at San Diego Scene would like to wish David Emmanual Pattynama and family a wonderful life together.
