Songs For Beginners

We've recently had people ask us what they thought a good song for a beginning singer would be. Often a KJ will suggest they sing something simple that they know well enough to follow the words along on the screen. But are there any particular songs that are good for a beginner to sing?

The basic rule is do a simple song that you are familiar with and (most important) is in your vocal range. Country songs are often simple and have basic repetitive melodies. "Crazy" is not only simple but most everyone knows it, and why it has always been one of the most often done songs in Karaoke. Some people need support, so simple duets like "I Got You Babe" are ideal. The "Grease" songs are easy and popular duets. Old 50's 60's and bubble gum songs are simple and if the singer is familiar with them, work well. The all time easiest beginner song is of course "Tequila", audiences and dancers love it. Supremes and Cindy Lauper tunes make great group songs.

Wild Thing by The Troggs is always a good suggestion for a first-time (male) singer. It's super easy, fun, upbeat, you can talk your way through it, it has a wide appeal, and the crowd always responds in a positive way....a sure bet.

For females, it's usually My Guy by Mary Wells or These Boots Are Made For Walkin' by Nancy Sinatra...also very easy songs with a wide appeal..

As a general rule, any of the "Frat Rock" style party songs are also pretty good:
"Tequila" - The Champs
"Twist & Shout" - The Beatles
"Old Time Rock n' Roll" - Bob Seger
"I Love Rock n' Roll" - Joan Jett
Sweet Dreams are Made of These by the Eurythmics.

These are usually songs people know well enough that they won't be stressed out about how the tune goes, or what the lyrics are. Also, these songs tend to get pretty good crowd response, which helps encourage the new singer.

Other suggestions:
"Joy To The World"-lyrics are simple & repetitive. The multiples repetition of the chorus let the new singer practice more during the song.
"Takin' Care Of Business"-easy & fun to do for a first timer or group of first timers.
Theme songs for TV or Traditional songs-They are usually short and easy.
