Karaoke Format Q & A
Q. How Many Karaoke Formats Are There Available?
A. CDG, VCD, DVD, Laser Disc 12", Midi-Karaoke, MP3+G
and VHS.
Please note that some formats might not be legal in all countries.
Q. What's the difference between CDG, VCD and DVD?
A. Not a lot at first glance apart from the fact that the VCD
and some DVDs have a video with them maybe of some far flung foreign
place where we all might like to be!
The VCD original footage discs have, as the title implies,
original footage of the original artist/s singing that song, whereas
the CDG compact disc+ graphics only has the text of the song unless
its EUR DKG or USA then it may have some still shots to add some
interest.
Q. What Does CDG Stand For?
A. CDG stands for Compact Disc + Graphics (also known CD+G)
A CDG is a compact disc created with graphics in addition to the
standard audio track found on a normal audio CD. A CDG player
is required to play the graphics on such a disc. The CDG player
uses what is know as a CDG Decoder to read the special graphics
track on the CDG disc.
Q. What Does VCD Stand For?
A. It stands for Video CD it's predecessor to DVD and was created
by Sony and Phillips. It never caught on anywhere other than North
Asia as a format for watching movies, but did catch on as a format
for karaoke songs that have a video as a background. These background
videos can be anything from a video of the original artists (the
original artist brand) to soft-pornography (the playboy brand).
The quality of the picture isn't that great compared with DVD,
it's nearest comparison is with VHS video. That said picture quality
isn't the biggest factor when talking about karaoke and in short
VCD is a good karaoke format.
Q. What Does DVD Stand For?
A. DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc. Most people assume
the 'V' stands for video! Versatile gets its credit from the fact
that the format is very versatile, in that there are lots more
features to be found on a DVD. Sound tracks, galleries, deleted
scenes, extra footage, outakes, web links etc.
Q. What Is A Karaoke Laser Disc?
A. Laser disc is an very early predecessor of DVD and CD. Although
they have the silvery appearance of a CD they are enormous in
comparison, roughly the size of a LP. And like a LP they have
two sides so unless you have a special player when your playing
the disc all the way through you have to take them out and turn
them over half way through. When karaoke first took off, though,
it was expensive it was a popular format as it allowed you to
have a typically cheesy video as the background to the lyrics.
With the invention of video CD, which is only the size of a regular
CD and doesn't need to be turned over, laser disc dropped dramatically
in popularity.
