Cat People, Lefties and Karaoke
By Sandra Miller
We seem to have a lot of "cat people" in the karaoke
community and I often wonder if the dog/cat divide has a musical
aspect. Do singers love free spirits? Do cats and karaoke go together?
I should poll the karaoke community some day. If you guys do get
a questionnaire about this some years from now, you'll know I
was stuck for a magazine topic.
Dogs are more my thing. Sorta hard to be in a bad mood when,
no matter how bad your days gone, and how many times you yell,
scream, holler and throw things, they are still going to come
up and give you a big wet slobbery kiss. And then when you look
down to tell them to "git", you'll end up petting them
instead.
Trained is a good thing though. Sit, speak, roll over, fetch,
no, bring me my slippers, fix me my breakfast, do all my laundry.
On a good day. Maybe. But a cat? Not a chance.
Here's another one. This will ruin your enjoyment of the movies.
Don't read on.
Or do.
If you watch characters in TV drama or in films when they are
shown writing, a majority of them are left handed - my guess is
five or more times the normal proportion.
What does that prove? Actors are left handed, you say....
Well, there are a ton of well known and very popular actors
that happen to be left handed, so it makes sense that you would
be seeing a lot of them lately. Dan Aykroyd, Tim Allen, Matthew
Broderick, Carol Burnett, Charlie Chaplin, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon,
Robert DeNiro, Michael Dorn, Richard Dreyfuss, Peter Fonda, Greta
Garbo, Whoopie Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Rock Hudson, Diane Keaton,
Nicole Kidman, Michael Landon, Shirley MacLaine, Steve McQueen,
Howie Mandel, Marilyn Monroe, Sarah Jessica Parker, Richard Pryor,
Robert Redford, Julia Roberts, Jerry Seinfeld, Christian Slater,
Slyvester Stallone, Dick Van Dyke, Bruce Willis....
But it ain't that simple, because one of the characters I'm
thinking of is Bart Simpson, and he's... how can I put this delicately?...
There's no actor.
Hmmmmmm.......
What is it they say about people who are left handed, or right
brain dominant?
Left-handers, in general, are supposed to be individualistic,
creative, intuitive, holistic and image oriented. They are strategic
thinkers. They have unusually good musical memories and are good
at recalling pitch. And because of their exceptional sense of
distance and proportion, lefties also excel in the fields of art
and architecture.
Not to mention that several recent US Presidents were lefties.
So what does this all have to do with karaoke? Nothing really.
This is all just fascinating, but useless trivia I've picked up
from surfing the net lately for karaoke in the news. That and
the fact that I'm a whiz at researching fascinating, but useless
information.
